Summit County Hiking

Hiking is a great way to explore the local area and discover the region's flora, fauna and wildlife. Alpine lakes, waterfalls, wildflower meadows, jagged peaks as well as historic gold camps, ghost towns and mining relics all await Summit County hikers. The altitude in this area ranges from 7,000 feet to 14,270 feet -- a difference of more than 7,000 feet. This elevation spread provides a variety of flower ecosystems hikers can enjoy on a single hike. It may be as simple as a stroll along a creek, or your family might feel adventurous enough to summit a local peak. Backpacks are available so adults can carry a youngster on their back. Check local bookstores for literature on hiking in the area, a great resource for finding the right hike for you. If your family is hungry for more in-depth information on the area, consider a guided nature hike or take one of the many classes, tours and workshops. Be sure everyone in the group is outfitted with proper footwear. Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support are essential if you plan to do anything off a maintained trail. Hiking at this altitude is not for the faint at heart. You may quickly become winded when ascending, and you want to make sure to carry plenty of water to prevent dehydration. If you are not sure about how much climbing you want to do with the whole clan, consider taking a Gondola or chairlift to the top of a local ski mountain, and taking a leisurely stroll back down.
